Wordcount: 982 words
Fandom: Marvel Something-or-Other
Rating: T
Relationships: James “Bucky” Barnes & Clint Barton
Characters: Clint Barton, James “Bucky” Barnes

“You know I’m not.”
“Can’t blame a guy for hoping.”

So here’s my [community profile] trickortreatex fic!

I got two gifts this year: Curd-Cutting by Fioment, which is an excellent exploration of an incident in Colin Provolone’s personal history with the Bulbian Church.

And venus febriculosa by summerstudie, which is a Carmilla fic which I also love and recommend, but it’s dark somnophilia from the rapist’s PoV, so don’t click unless you want that.

OC-tober

Okay, so last year when I was taking a break from writing I got an idea for a novel set in Toronto in 1920, and that’s been brewing ever since. Here’s my various posts about it on tumblr. (That link works on desktop but may not work if it tries to open in the app, because Tumblr Is A Functioning Website.) And then this October [tumblr.com profile] icannotreadcursive made a list of original character prompts, so I did a few of those, and generally it was a fun thing to think about at work even for the ones that didn’t get written down. Although they are also all in the tag above, here’s the links separately:

Day 3: In a cherished memory (Josie)

Day 4: Waking up from a nightmare (Fred and Tom)

Day 10: In a different time period (Modern AU, everyone)

Day 16: Expressing or exploring their spirituality (Verry, definitely not doing that)

Day 24: Being cared for by someone they love (Verry, Tom, and Fred)

And earlier this month I also posted a ficlet for Band Sinister by K. J. Charles.

I am also in [community profile] trickortreatex, but I haven't opened my gifts yet so I will post about that after the anon period.

Dear Yuletide Writer:

Hi! Thanks so much for writing for me, and congratulations on your evident good taste!

If you want to benignly internet-stalk me to get an idea of my interests, Tumblr and AO3 are probably a better idea than DW. However, my previous Yuletide-related posts are tagged here.

This year I requested Band Sinister by K. J. Charles, the Roaring Twenties Magic series by Allie Therin, and Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms by Mercedes Lackey. I am happy with any fic rating or length, and welcome treats.

A large and random list of things I like in general: worldbuilding, hurt/comfort, huddling for warmth, teamwork, competence, adventure, lesbians, ethical dilemmas, loyalty conflicts, people being clever, twisty plots, gender issues, sibling or sibling-like relationships, epistolary fic, backstory, pining, physical affection, queerness, philosophy, romance, UST, found families, mythological and literary allusions, polyamory, slash, het, femslash, passionate platonic friendships, hidden worlds, cities, banter, complicated plans, beautiful landscapes, angst, puns, magical realism, history, social class issues, older women with major roles, case fic, period accuracy, gen, smut, pwp, diversity of opinion, secret identities, fairy tales, specific sense of place... Feel free to use any of these, do not try to use all of them.

Dislikes: I do not want child- or pregnancy-focused fic, or high school AUs, or fic entirely centred around a wedding or wedding preparation. I'm not interested in incest or graphic depictions of rape or gore or torture.

Generally I am all for alternate universes, but in these fandoms the setting is a lot of the draw for me, so perhaps not wildly alternate ones.

Fandom specific thoughts and optional details:

Decay may exist as an extant form of life but that doesn't mean you want to hang out with it

I'm feeling very accomplished right now.

Title: Come to Dust
Rating: Teen
Universe: Dimension 20: The Ravening War
Characters: Colin Provolone, Delissandro Katzon, Amangeaux Epicée du Peche, Saprophian Hivemind, Original Mushroom Character(s), Possibly Other Canon Characters
Warnings/Enticements: Alternate Ending, Sharing a Bed, Jealousy, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Parenting, Canon-Typical Violence, Nightmares, Body Horror, Psychological Horror, Mind Manipulation, Memory Loss
Summary: In this moment, connected with the creature, you sense a sadness, and a maternal protectiveness of its children, and you all immediately understand that if you don’t run now, you’ll never see the Bulb’s light again.

Colin, Deli, and Amangeaux don’t make it out of the Heart Chamber.

The fungus doesn’t kill them, though. It never meant to kill them.

Comments halfway through Rupert of Hentzau

I’ve been reading this off and on for about two months now, with speed depending on how comparatively gripping whatever I’ve got out from the library at the same time is. I haven’t read it before, but I do know some of the major spoilers.

For a while there it was going very slowly because it felt like an adventure novel crossed with a French farce, which actually would be a great idea if you did it on purpose. But now the title character is back on page and it’s going faster again.

It’s interesting, because of course The Prisoner of Zenda is a majorly influential work in Western literature (or at least Western pop culture) … which most people today haven’t actually heard of. And Rupert of Hentzau is unfortunately not a very satisfactory sequel. (Whereas the Scarlet Pimpernel series went on for over a dozen books.)

I want to blame it on Fritz being a weaker narrator than Rudolf, but that’s a cop-out, because of course Anthony Hope is writing both of them. And I can see how even just reordering the narrative in the middle would make everything way more suspenseful and remove the (perceived) need for Fritz’s defences of other characters acting on limited information.

Doesn’t pass the Bechdel test - lots of women, sometimes they even talk to each other, but there isn’t anything for them to talk about except men. But I am still disappointed that no one on AO3 has written Helga/Flavia fanfic, because Flavia deserves someone like that.

Dimension 20 Meta

So here are all the Ravening War meta bits I've posted on tumblr. I'm not cross-posting most of the liveblogging, though. Assume they all have spoilers.

On Fructera and Vegetania )

On Karna post-season )

(no subject)

One of my few superstitions is that I don't want to talk about anything good until it has already happened, in case I jinx it, but today was my first day at work and everything is good, so I think I can say: DW, I have a job! A full time job! With benefits! Yay!

Apart from that, I have been liveblogging and writing various meta about Dimension 20: The Ravening War on Tumblr: Calorum, Amangeaux, Karna

I also wrote a poem which contains massive spoilers for A Court of Fey and Flowers.

Of course what it took for me to get into actual play was a murder mystery

I have been thinking lately about alternate universes versus retellings (like fairy tale retellings). An alternate universe, in the fandom sense, is usually the same characters in a different plot, or a different setting. The characters are the constant (fanon notwithstanding), and everything else may have parallels, but it doesn't need to be the same or even similar.

But in a retelling, the plot is sometimes more of a constant than the characters. The events are the important part, and the characters are filled out in different ways to fit those events. A retelling is not a fandom style alternate universe, it's Terry Pratchett's narrativium. You need to have characters in the right situations to produce the story, but a different retelling can have almost entirely different characters. The plot is what's important, not who it's happening to.

Mice and Murder is a story inspired by Sherlock Holmes (specifically the RDJ movies), but I don't think it's a Sherlock Holmes adaptation (unlike, say, Basil of Baker Street), because Sylvester Cross is not Sherlock Holmes (and Lars isn't Watson, and Daisy D'Umpstaire isn't Irene Adler, etc.). Although he is apparently similar enough to have produced this.

Title: Always Nice to See You
Rating: G
Universe: Dimension 20: Mice and Murder
Characters: Sylvester Cross, Lars Vandenchomp
Warnings/Enticements: Pre-Canon, Pre-Relationship, Dungeons & Dragons Game Mechanics, Serious Injuries, Hurt/Comfort, Second meeting
Summary: A broken hip and a forged alliance.
Word Count: 920

Toe Hats

I'm too tired to blog or read or socialize, but apparently not too tired to write this up.

Two feet resting on a chair, wearing bright wool toe covers.

So from one point of view this pattern is completely unnecessary. You could just wear wool socks in the first place.

But sometimes you weren't expecting to need wool socks today. And your toes are cold. (Whenever I start looking at sock yarn, my feet immediately feel cold, no matter what the actual temperature is.) And you don't want to get up.

Here is a quick way to use up scrap yarn, which you can then keep in your office and slip on over your cotton socks when it turns out to be colder than you expected. Mine have a little decorative rib pattern, but you can just knit k2p2 rib if you prefer.

Nominations Queries Post Time!

It is October, which means it is my favourite time of year: Nominations Queries Post time!

For those of you who don't pay much attention to fanworks exchanges, a nominations queries post is a post made during the tagset approvals portion of an AO3 exchange, where the mod(s) of the exchange ask the nominators exactly who they meant by "Vampire Chick (Twilight)" and whether there's a better fandom name than "Two Books From This Series But Not the Third One Which I Hate - Author Name".

Usually it starts a bit earlier, but neither Trick or Treat Ex nor FemslashEx (signups still open!) had much in the way of noms queries this year. Which is good for the mods, of course, but means I had to wait until Yuletide noms closed to get my fix. Reading nominations guidelines and the evidence post work too, although not quite as well.

I'm not sure why I love these posts so much. It has very little to do with whether I've heard of the fandom or not. There's the putting-things-into-little-boxes impulse, and the watching-people-being-really-interested-in-really-specific-things enjoyment. And also there's sentences like
Nominator of Elder Gods, we don’t accept group nominations if the group contains distinct characters. Could you pick an Elder God, please?
and
Nominator, for 'The Snake', which snake did you want? The snake who enters the crypt first, or the second snake, who brings the first snake back to life?
which really remind me exactly what I love about fandom in specific and human creativity in general. It's like getting a peek into dozens of different tiny little worlds.

I have had a good time reading the evidence post and having strong irrelevant opinions over whether [fandom X] should qualify for Yuletide, and I expect to have another good week enjoying the results of modly tag approvals.

Ontario Election Advance Voting

The Ontario provincial election is Thursday, June 2nd. But if you're busy then, you can vote in advance!

The last day to apply to vote by mail in Ontario is Friday May 27th (traductions françaises disponibles). The deadline is 6pm.

The in-person advance polls are open 10am-8pm every day until Saturday May 28th. You can also vote in person at your local returning office until June 1st. You can find your local voting locations HERE.

If you have applied to vote by mail you cannot change your mind and vote in person on election day. The mail in ballot process is explained in a short PDF here or a video here (français).

Elections Ontario must receive your ballot by 6pm on election day. That’s June 2nd. If you haven’t mailed it before the end of May, go drop it off at your local returning office.

Your voting kit will come with paperwork. If you make a mistake in voting by mail, no one can tell you about it and help you fix it in time. READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN YOUR VOTING KIT.

And if you’re voting in person and you’re not 100% sure how to do it, ask the election officials.

If you want to register to vote before election day you can do that HERE. (But even if you aren't registered, you CAN still vote.)

More information here. Plus d'informations ici. Other languages here.

AO3 Averages Meme

I got my booster shot yesterday, which has knocked me out like all the others. My immune system would like to know wtf I'm playing at.

Current pandemic obsession is embroidery, and at the moment specifically needlelace (modern explanation, Victorian explanation), which is something like embroidery without the cloth. It's also much more manageable than bobbin lace; if I tried to set up a lace pillow covered in pins and things hanging from strings around Pepper terrible things would happen.

I have been throwing myself into that with all the enthusiasm of someone who is avoiding preparing for the new semester and also has a bunch of Agatha Christie audiobooks on Libby, but in the interests of avoiding eyestrain, and also because I just had a shower and am now utterly out of energy, have a meme.

Genius and Ink: Virginia Woolf on How to Read

When such a spirit of curiosity has fully taken hold of us, the dust will soon lie thick upon the classics unless some necessity forces us to read them. For the living voices are, after all, the ones we understand the best. We can treat them as we treat our equals; they are guessing our riddles, and, what is perhaps more important, we understand their jokes. And we soon develop another taste, unsatisfied by the great - not a valuable taste, perhaps, but certainly a very pleasant possession - the taste for bad books. Without committing the indiscretion of naming names we know which authors can be trusted to produce yearly (for happily they are prolific) a novel, a book of poems or essays, which affords us indescribable pleasure. We owe a great deal to bad books; indeed, we come to count their authors and their heroes among those figures who play so large a part in our silent life.

So a variety of fics

First of all, the Retired Beekeepers of Sussex are no longer holding events, and while their journals are still archived online I thought I should put this on AO3:

Title: Discretion
Rating: G
Universe: ACD Holmes
Characters: Mrs. Hudson, Sherlock Holmes
Warnings/Enticements: Character Study, Victorian Attitudes
Summary: Mrs Hudson overhears something, and is thrown into an ethical dilemma.
Word Count: 722

On AO3

And here is a (very brief) second chapter to a fic from September:

Title: Far to Go
Rating: T
Universe: Marvel
Characters: Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton, Bucky Barnes
Warnings/Enticements: De-Aging, Implied Child Abuse, Canon-Typical Violence, Natasha Romanov Backstory, Angst, Paranoia, Hurt/Comfort, Natasha Romanov Needs a Hug, But She Certainly Wouldn't Accept One, Sign Language, Blizzards, Handcuffs, Unreliable Narrator
Summary: "You know the kind of thing: scientists make something, realize they have no use for it and no one sane would want it around, and then instead of destroying it like anyone sensible would they stick it in a high security containment facility and forget about it until someone steals it, and we have to go and steal it back. They say it’s only dangerous if you drink it, we say great, we’ll have it back by Tuesday, and then Natasha touches the bottle and loses twenty years."
--
It's a test. Of course it's a test. She must have been drugged. This must be a false mission set up by the Red Room. These men must be Red Room too. She just has to figure out how to pass the test.

Right?

And finally, from a shameless self promotion angle, if you are waiting impatiently for Yuletide to open, have a fic recommendation:

Warnings/Enticements: Episode Style, History, Canon-Typical Weirdness, Mentions of Human Sacrifice, Mentions of RPF (Real Poultry Fiction), Characters Participating in Yuletide, Holidays, Humour
