Oh help, look at all these glorious recs. :D I read Those Who Hunt the Night ages ago and, if memory serves, both liked it and could not at all see how a sequel would work, but now I'm feeling tempted.

And The Comfortable Courtesan (which I had to duckduckgo) is amazing. I've only just gotten as far as epistolary mathematickal flirtation, but it is such a delight!

Also I am sorry that your day has not been great, and glad that at least there is wonderful fiction to comfort you.
