That is awesome, about why they had democracy in the first place -- where by "awesome" I mean "hilariously plausible". Of course it came down to expediency; why would I have imagined anything different?
There has to be a reason for everyone to buy in, even if it looks like a tiny, inadequate reason in another society. Or at least, there has to be a way things could be worse.
Yeah. For some reason I'm reminded of a phenomenon that tends to baffle me almost as much as it pains me, which is when women try to score points off men by impugning their masculinity, as if the absence of manliness were the worst thing ever. I always think, can't you see you're just shooting yourselves in the foot? But of course, it isn't just shooting themselves in the foot; if it were, people would hardly ever do it. There are advantages to supporting the dominant system, even if you aren't at the top of the hierarchy.
